Roles decide what the members of your server can do. Each member can carry one or more roles; a member’s permissions are the sum of the permissions of the roles they hold.
Creating a role
- Click the server name and open Server Settings → Roles.
- Press Create role; set the role’s name and colour. The role colour is the colour the member’s name is shown in, in the member list and in messages.
- Toggle the permissions and save.
- To give the role to members, pick the member on the Members tab and add the role.
Permissions
Permissions are presented in groups. The most commonly used:
- General — view channels, create invites, change nickname
- Management — manage channels, manage roles, edit server settings, view the audit log
- Moderation — kick, ban and time out members; delete other people’s messages
- Text — send messages, attach files, use mentions (@everyone), add reactions
- Voice — connect, speak, share screen, mute/deafen others
The Administrator permission includes every other permission and overrides channel-level restrictions; give it only to people you fully trust.
Role order
The order in the roles list sets the hierarchy: a member can only edit roles below their own highest role and can only moderate members in those roles. The server owner is always at the top and cannot be limited by any role.
Channel-level permissions
From a channel’s settings you can define channel-specific permissions for certain roles — for example, allowing only moderators to post in an announcement channel, or making a private channel visible only to certain roles.
The @everyone role
The @everyone role, present in every server, sets the permissions every member has at minimum. Use it to decide what newcomers can do; limiting file attachments for new members, for example, reduces spam.
